As a new widow, I expected profound sadness, but was thrown off-guard by changing relationships and unexpected social awkwardness.
I was upset with well-meaning people who
- offered "words of wisdom"
- compared their prior losses to mine
- introduced me as a widow before I was ready
- failed to include me
- assumed I'd be back on my feet after a year
- seeking too much sympathy
- asking for help too often
- responding unhappily to invitations
- telling my story of loss to strangers
- sharing the worst side of me with my closest friends

Dr. Eileen Cooley has touched my heart with her well-written, reflective essays on adjusting to life as a new widow. Her book provides real life experiences about the emotions and feelings of a woman that are relevant for a man as well. Relating to friends, fitting into various social settings, and filtering how much to share with others are just a few of the topics she discusses. Although I have not lost a spouse, I found her insights to be applicable in many situations involving deep loss of a loved one. The best advice comes at the end of each essay where Dr. Cooley examines her own perspective as a psychologist and professor and answers the question, "What I can do for myself." I highly recommend this book and appreciate the heightened awareness and sensitivity I have as a result of reading it. Well done!Product details

Newly Widowed Now Socially Awkward Facing Interpersonal Challenges After Loss Eileen L Cooley PhD 9780998477800 Books Reviews
This is a wonderful book. As a friend of someone who lost a spouse, it was helpful to get a sense of the vast variety of things – large and small – that are difficult or awkward. The book is also helpful in negotiating the loss of a relationship Well worth a read!
Excellent book in a very readable format. The author uses short chapters to convey each of the many social challenges she faced as a new widow. Not written in a self-help style, but rather as her personal journey to reacclimate to the social world after her husband's death.
I've been widowed for more that 14 years but I still found the essays useful. I went through the awkward phase - saying NO to invitations that I should have said YES to, only recognizing this in hindsight. It's a book to read no matter how long ago it happened, but especially at the beginning of the journey.
This is written with the intimacy of talking to a friend. The author writes of awkward and difficult situations with warmth and still manages to provide real world ways of dealing. She acknowledges the extreme difficulty of your ongoing life as you deal with your grief. Whether you are going through this terrible time yourself or want to better understand a friends position, this book provides helpful insights pared with actual ways of getting through. It's easy to read a few passages and return again for more insight.
My husband died 16 months ago and Dr. Cooley expresses so many of my own thought processes in her very readable, practical book. I found such comfort in comparing my experiences to hers. I'm not ready for my grief to be gone either, and it's good to hear from someone who truly understands what that means. The chapters are brief (as are the attention spans of widows or widowers), and "What I Can Do For Myself" at the end of each chapter provides solid footing for coming to terms with emotions. Thank you, Eileen Cooley!
As a widow, I can appreciate and fully understand all of the emotions and experiences that Dr. Cooley writes about. She is so accurate with the description of her feelings and her relationships and the awkward situations she experienced after her husband died. I can completely relate to all that she wrote. Her format of writing makes it easy for one to read. She writes an essay to describe each situation and then writes a short explanation of how she could have handled it differently. One can read and reread one essay at a time if they wished learn from it and put it down and pick it back
This book is good to give to widows both recent and longer term so that they don't think that their feelings as well as their changes in old relationships are unique or that something is wrong with them. With this book you realize that you are not alone in much of your thoughts. While everyone experiences grief in a different way, I have found that many widows share a lot of similar experiences and as well as how people react to them.
It is also a helpful book to give to family and friends of recent widows to see what the widow is going through. It is also important for friends and family to realize that grief has no time limit and not to expect their widow family/ friends to finished grieving based on some random time line.
This is also an excellent book to give to care givers and people that counsel widows so that they can see what an actual widow feels and experiences rather than just base their counseling on information they learn in a text book.
This is a heartfelt, practical and empathetic guide to learning about and managing your own loss as well as learning how to treat others who are facing loss. I felt as though I was sitting with Eileen Cooley in a cozy living room and sharing the range of thoughts and emotions that can be universal to for all of us.
Though this book is specific to the loss of a spouse, I recommend it to everyone because we have faced or will face the death of a close friend or family member and we will all know someone we care about who will face such a loss. There are so many good lessons described that reminds us to always try and practice kindness.
